During my two years of saying Kaddish, first for my mother and then for my father, I accepted the old Jewish bromide that Kaddish, the classic prayer for the dead, actually has nothing to do with death. It is a song of praise, I was taught. And so I wrote. But after two years of talking about my book, "Living a Year of Kaddish," in front of audiences around the country - and listening to how people regard Kaddish - I realize that there is no separating it from death, not only in the public mind but in the text as well.
