Province charged with destroying Seine habitat

OTTAWA -- The provincial department created to protect Manitoba's waterways and fishery is facing federal charges for destroying 35 kilometres of habitat along the Seine River.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans charged Manitoba Water Stewardship and its executive director, Steve Topping, after a lengthy investigation into a December 2003 incident where the river passes underneath Highway 59.
Under the Fisheries Act, a conviction carries a maximum fine of $200,000.
