Large Group of Blacks Inducted Into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences: Four of the New Black Fellows Are Academics

Established in 1779, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is America's most prestigious honorary society. From the time of its founding, and for at least a century afterwards, no blacks were admitted as fellows. Today, 227 years later, it appears that of the academy's 4,000 fellows, 73, or about 1.8 percent, are black.

This year 175 new fellows were elected to the academy as were 20 new foreign honorary members. Among the new members this year are former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and new chief justice of the United States John Roberts.
