His family wanted him committed to an insane asylum.
In 1835 Wendell Phillips, a wealthy Boston attorney, showed no sympathies for the abolitionist movement. But one day Phillips had an epiphany when he attended a rally of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society.
In the early years of the nineteenth century, the abolitionist movement was in its infancy and had very few supporters in the city of Boston.
