Ninety-seven years ago, a radically new dirigible air transport service was launched between Berlin and Vienna. Passengers were wafted over a breathtaking panorama of cities, castles, and Alpine mountain ranges. This was in 1909, and over the next several years the dirigibles, moving at 80 miles an hour, made 1,600 trouble-free flights and carried nearly 100,000 travellers safely and comfortably between the two European cities.
