Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was one of America's most influential black leaders in the 1950s and early 60s, a charismatic minister and powerful Congressman representing New York's predominantly black Harlem district. Charges of financial impropriety eventually led to his political downfall, and in recent decades he has faded from public memory.
