Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate variation in calf performance from birth to weaning attributable to breed of sire (BRS), breed of dam (BRD), sex of calf, and all interactions. Records from 2,352 calves born at the Pinetree Research Unit of the Arkansas Experiment Station were utilized in the study. Physical environment and the available production resources make this location one of the more challenging environments for feeder calf production in the state. Some ...

Breed Comparisons of Weight, Weight Adjusted for Condition Score, Height, and Condition Score of Beef Cows1
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Breeds were compared for differences in BW (n = 56,731), heights (n = 51,407) and body condition scores (BCS, n = 56,371) of 2- to 8-yr-old cows from four cycles of the Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) Program at the U. S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC). Angus, Hereford, and topcross cows

Review: The issue of dystocia expressed when sires varying in percent Bos indicus inheritance are mated to Bos taurus females
Professional Animal Scientist ; REVIEW: The Issue of Dystocia Expressed when Sires Varying in Percent Bos indicus Inheritance Are Mated to Bos taurus Females1 Abstract This review reveals that dystocia, with associated increased mortality and(or) reduced survival rate, can be a problem when sires varying in percent Bos indices

Selecting AI Beef Sires for Maximum Profit
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Beef producers face a complex decision-making process when selecting from among AI sires that range widely in price and expected progeny difference (EPD) for various traits. Although individual producers vary in specific production goals, their goal in genetic improvement is generally
Effects of a Single Dose of Direct-Fed Microbials on Performance of Stocker Calves Grazing Annual Cool-Season Grasses1
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Previous research has shown that beef calves have less ADG during the first 3 wk of grazing winter wheat pastures. Three experiments were conducted to determine the impact of a single oral dose of direct-fed microbials (DFM) on the overall performance of stocker calves grazing annual
REVIEW: Expected Versus Realized Progeny Differences for Various Beef Cattle Traits1
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Studies were summarized that compared expected with realized progeny differences for birth weight (BBW), weaning weight (WBW), yearling weight (YBW), marbling (MAB), hot carcass weight (CWT), subcutaneous fat (FAT), longissimus muscle area (LEA), percent lean yield (%LY), milk (MLK), total
Genetic parameters of postnatal mortality in Danish Holstein calves
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of postnatal mortality (PM) in dairy cattle. Data originated from 841,921 Danish Holstein calves. Four binary traits of mortality were considered: D1-14, D15-60, D61-180, and D1-180 with numbers indicating the period of risk in
