Jesus in the Footsteps of Jeremiah

THE FIGURE OF JEREMIAH in the collective memory of the Jews provides fer tile ground for many other writers and movements in the first-century world. Among those who also walk in Jeremiah's footsteps are the likes of Josephus, Yohanan ben Zakkai, and Baruch.1 The example of sixth-century Israel must have been an overpowering icon for the first century: a foreign army, a city surrounded, a temple destroyed, a prophet denouncing the past and envisioning a new Israel. Thus it was for Palestine and its new Jeremiahs of the first century.
