Canadian-born American physical chemist William Francis Giauque was awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his studies on the properties of matter at temperatures close to absolute zero. He dedicated more than 60 years to the field of cryogenics, the study of matter at very low temperatures.
