ABSTRACT
Spo11 or a homologous protein appears to be essential for meiotic DNA double-strand break (DSB) formation and recombination in all organisms tested. We report here the first example of an alternative, mutationally activated pathway for meiotic recombination in the absence of Rec12, the Spo11 homolog of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Rad2, a FEN-1 flap endonuclease homolog, is involved in processing Okazaki fragments. In its absence, meiotic recombination and proper segregation of ...

Representation and absence: paradoxical structure in postmodern texts.

; MEANING OF ABSENCE AND ABSENCE OF MEANING If we all agree that ontological undermining constitutes the predominant feature of postmodernity, then absence constitutes, I believe, the quintessential structure of postmodern texts. Even though absence was recognized as such by many scholars in the

Meiotic Recombination in Drosophila Msh6 Mutants Yields Discontinuous Gene Conversion Tracts
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Crossovers (COs) generated through meiotic recombination are important for the correct segregation of homologous chromosomes during meiosis. Several models describing the molecular mechanism of meiotic recombination have been proposed. These models differ in the arrangement of heteroduplex

The Budding Yeast Mei5 and Sae3 Proteins Act Together With Dmc1 During Meiotic Recombination
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Here we provide evidence that the Mei5 and Sae3 proteins of budding yeast act together with Dmc1, a meiosis-specific, RecA-like recombinase. The mei5 and sae3 mutations reduce sporulation, spore viability, and crossing over to the same extent as dmc1. In all three mutants, these defects

Heteroduplex DNA in Meiotic Recombination in Drosophila mei-9 Mutants
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Meiotic recombination gives rise to crossovers, which are required in most organisms for the faithful segregation of homologous chromosomes during meiotic cell division. Characterization of crossover-defective mutants has contributed much to our understanding of the molecular mechanism of

Linear Element-Independent Meiotic Recombination in Schizosaccharomyces pombe
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Most organisms form protein-rich, linear, ladder-like structures associated with chromosomes during early meiosis, the synaptonemal complex. In Schizosaccharomyces pombe, linear elements (LinEs) are thread-like, proteinacious chromosome-associated structures that form during early meiosis.

MuDR Transposase Increases the Frequency of Meiotic Crossovers in the Vicinity of a Mu Insertion in the Maize a1 Gene
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Although DNA breaks stimulate mitotic recombination in plants, their effects on meiotic recombination are not known. Recombination across a maize a1 allele containing a nonautonomous Mu transposon was studied in the presence and absence of the MuDR-encoded transposase. Recombinant A1'

A Genetic Analysis of the Drosophila mcm5 Gene Defines a Domain Specifically Required for Meiotic Recombination
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Members of the minichromosome maintenance (MCM) family have pivotal roles in many biological processes. Although originally studied for their role in DNA replication, it is becoming increasingly apparent that certain members of this family are multifunctional and also play roles in

The determinants of labor absence: economic factors and workgroup norms across countries.
Industrial and Labor Relations Review
; Recently, economic research has begun focusing on the causes of absence. In this study we use a new, cross-national data set to test three explanations of voluntary absence behavior. The first explanation is based on a traditional labor-leisure choice framework; the second is suggested by the work
