I ride trains because I believe in adventure. Dame May Whitty or Robert Walker may sit beside me; Hercule Poirot may board at any moment.

Such, at least, is the fantasy. The reality is more mundane - and when I took the Talgo, the high-speed night train between Paris and Madrid, I saw no adventure.
