Prograde temperature-time evolution in the Barrovian type-locality constrained by Sm/Nd garnet ages from Glen Clova, Scotland
|
Abstract: The timing of garnet growth during metamorphism associated with the Grampian Orogeny in the sillimanite zone of the Barrovian type-locality in Glen Clova, Scotland, was determined by Sm/Nd geochronology. Two high precision garnet-whole-rock ages were achieved by employing HF partial dissolution of garnet separates to optimize purity. Multiple garnet growth generations were identified on the basis of the geochronology and detailed textural and chemical data: an early stage, at 472.9+...

Timing of deposition, orogenesis and glaciation within the Dalradian rocks of Scotland: Constraints from U-Pb zircon ages
Journal of the Geological Society
; Abstract: The stratigraphical and structural continuity of the Late Proterozoic Dalradian rocks of the Scottish Highlands is re-examined in the light of new U-Pb zircon ages on the tuffs belonging to the Tayvallich Volcanic Formation (601 4 Ma), and on the late Grampian `Newer Gabbros' (470 9 Ma)

Changing Silurian-Devonian relative plate motion in the Caledonides: Sinistral transpression to sinistral transtension
Journal of the Geological Society
; Abstract: The late Silurian to mid- or late Devonian interval in the Caledonides was a period dominated, sequentially, by sinistral transpression, strike-slip and transtension during the development of mainly non-marine 'red-bed' basins following the Ludlow-PrIdolI transition from marine to

Sedimentary basin and detrital zircon record along East Laurentia and Baltica during assembly and breakup of Rodinia
Journal of the Geological Society
; Abstract: Tectonic processes associated with supercontinent cycles result in a variety of basin types, and the isotopic dating of detrital minerals within sedimentary sequences assists palaeogeographical reconstructions. Basins located along the Laurentia-Baltica margin prior to assembly of Rodinia

Geochronology and geodynamics of Scottish granitoids from the late Neoproterozoic break-up of Rodinia to Palaeozoic collision
Journal of the Geological Society
; Abstract: Thirty-seven granitoids from Scotland have been dated using the sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe zircon method. Granitoids were intruded during: (1) crustal stretching at c. 600 Ma after Rodinia broke up (A-types); (2) the Grampian event of crustal thickening when the Midland

U-Pb zircon geochronology of migmatization in the northern Central Highlands: Evidence for pre-Caledonian (Neoproterozoic) tectonometamorphism in Grampian block, Scotland
Journal of the Geological Society
; Abstract: The age and formation of zircons in Neoproterozoic migmatites from the northern Grampian Highlands are assessed using field observations, imaging and U-Pb isotope dilution techniques. Acicular zircons within monzogranitic leucosomes provide evidence for neocrystalline growth during

A Rheic cause for the Acadian deformation in Europe
Journal of the Geological Society
; Abstract: The Acadian (mid-Devonian) deformation in NW Europe has typically been interpreted as the culminating event of the Silurian closure of the Iapetus Ocean. This view has been challenged by the recognition of an intervening early Devonian transtensional event across part of the assembled
