Abstract

The Cumanians were originally Asian pastoral nomads who in the 13th century migrated to Hungary. We have examined mitochondrial DNA from members of the earliest Cumanian population in Hungary from two archeologically well-documented excavations and from 74 modern Hungarians from different rural locations in Hungary. Haplogroups were defined based on HVS I sequences and examinations of haplogroup-associated polymorphic sites of the protein coding region and of HVS II. To exclud...

Quantitative analysis of circulating mitochondrial DNA in plasma
Clinical Chemistry ; Clinical Chemistry 49:5 719-726 (2003) Background: Recent studies have demonstrated the existence of circulating mitochondrial DNA in plasma and serum, but the concentrations and physical characteristics of circulating mitochondrial DNA are unknown. The aim of this study was to develop an assay to
African Eve gets lost in the 'trees.' (mitochondrial DNA research)
Science News ; Since 1987, an influential group of molecular biologists has published several reports indicating that analyses of mitochondrial DNA -- genetic material located outside the cell nucleus and inherited only from the mother -- track the maternal lineage of all humans back to one or possibly several
New gene study enters human origins debate. (mitochondrial DNA analysis)
Science News ; In a finding that captured the imagination of a scientists and the public alike, researchers announced in 1987 that an analysis of mitochondrial DNA -- genetic material located outside the cell nucleus and inherited only from the mother -- traced the maternal lineage of all humans back to an
State will house, run a DNA lab for FBI; The feds will pay start-up costs and nine salaries for the lab specializing in mitochondrial DNA.(NEWS)
Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN) ; Byline: Heron Marquez Estrada; Staff Writer The state's BCA and the FBI are combining forces on DNA testing. The two agencies announced Thursday that the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been selected to start and operate one of four FBI-funded regional laboratories specializing in
CHANGES IN MITOCHONDRIAL DNA COULD HOLD THE KEY TO AGING.(News)
The Cincinnati Post (Cincinnati, OH) ; Byline: William McCall Associated Press Gray hair -- or no hair -- wrinkles and creaky joints are obvious reminders that you're not getting any younger. Scientists in Sweden say aging begins in a more fundamental way -- in the accumulation of tiny changes to a mysterious genetic component in cells
DNA diversifies domestication's roots.(mitochondrial DNA study of modern cattle indicates domestication had separate historical roots on each continent)(Brief Article)
Science News ; Scientists generally trace the domestication of the wild ox, or aurochs, to about 10,000 years ago in ancient Turkey or nearby parts of southwest Asia. These beasts of burden then served as the founding population for modern cattle breeds throughout the world, the predominant theory holds. A new
Analysis of Repeat-Mediated Deletions in the Mitochondrial Genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Genetics ; ABSTRACT Mitochondrial DNA deletions and point mutations accumulate in an age-dependent manner in mammals. The mitochondrial genome in aging humans often displays a 4977-bp deletion flanked by short direct repeats. Additionally, direct repeats flank two-thirds of the reported mitochondrial DNA
Mitochondrial DNA Variability in the Czech Population, with Application to the Ethnic History of Slavs
Human Biology ; Abstract Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variability was studied in a sample of 179 individuals representing the Czech population of Western Bohemia. Sequencing of two hypervariable segments, HVS I and HVS II, in combination with screening of coding-region haplogroup-specific RFLP markers revealed that
