one. So, too, does Dennis Nilsen, the serial killer. As does William
Boyd, the celebrated novelist. Like millions of others this disparate
triumvirate are diarists, daily memorialising in print the minutiae
of their lives. Each in his own way is famous - or infamous - and
could fairly claim to be writing for an audience beyond the immediate
one, namely themselves. They may even, in the case of Campbell or
Nilsen, be writing with a cynical eye to publication, no doubt
