ONe performer; 16 characters; 75 minutes. It's the kind of thing you'll find on almost any page of the Fringe programme. But when the playwright is William Shakespeare and the performer is Susannah York it's a pretty arresting proposition. Cleopatra alone is known for her "infinite variety". In York's show there are 15 more extraordinary women jostling in the wings, cajoling her to step out of character and introduce them. No wonder she describes the spirit of her show, The Loves Of Shakespeare's Women, as "chutzpah".

"People ask me who's my favourite character and it's really hard," she says.
