We're feeling plaid all over I AM writing with reference to the article on the Douglasses in the first of your two clan supplements (September 7 and 14).

William, First Earl of Douglas, who was a half-nephew of the Good Sir James of Douglas (who fought at Bannockburn), acquired the Earldom of Mar through marriage to Margaret, Countess of Mar in her own right. Their son James, the second Earl (who was killed at Otterburn in 1388) had no legitimate heirs.
