El Cid falls to earth as the bull bites back; Steve Bunce witnessed the scene as a fabled matador met his match in a night of blood and death

Last Saturday El Cid was lifted five feet off the sand by 610
kilos of bleeding, bewildered and furious bull. The flashcubes fell
dim and nobody moved as the blood turned El Cid's suit of lights a
dreadful red.
The bull caught El Cid in the left thigh in the fifth fight on the
opening night of the season at Madrid's Las Ventas arena. El Cid
landed in the blood and the dirt and snot from the wounded bull.
El Cid dragged his slight and bloody frame out of the bull's
vision and the capacity crowd of 22,500 people turned to the animal.
