Spain's most patriotic politician, according to thousands of ruined fishermen along 400km of coastline engulfed this week by tons of toxic sludge from the doomed tanker Prestige, is Jacques Chirac.

While Spanish politicians dithered in the days before the stricken tanker broke up and sank on Tuesday morning, only the French leader - whose country suffered a similar catastrophe two years ago when the Erika sank off Brittany - grasped the urgency of the moment and urged immediate action to stop ageing rust-buckets like the Prestige from threatening Europe's shores.
