BEBEL Gilberto was only nine when she had her first taste of the
big time - singing at New York's famous Carnegie Hall. "I was nervous
but having fun at the same time because I was with my mother. My
father couldn't make it so he decided to send me in his place. I was
feeling so important."
The occasion was a concert with jazz saxophonist Stan Getz; the
mother was Micha Buarque, sister of radical Brazilian musician Chico
Buarque and a singer herself; and the absent father was Joo Gilberto.
Known in his Brazilian homeland simply as O Mito - the legend - it
was his a 1963 session with Getz ...
