George Meikle Kemp The son of a Borders shepherd, Kemp worked as a
carpenter before turning to stonemasonry. He travelled throughout
Europe studying the great Gothic cathedrals and returned to Scotland
in 1826 to work as an architectural draughtsman.
His chance came in 1838 when he won the competition to build a
monument to honour the novelist Sir Walter Scott. The idea had been
prompted by Scott's son-in-law, the writer John Gibson Lockhart, who
had written to the publisher William Blackwood: "If the Edinburgh
people did well, they would put a statue where Castle Street cuts
