Face of Afghan spy revealed in forgotten photo; Gallery uncovers 150- year-old negativesof adventurer's historic visit to Scotland

Mohan Lal, interpreter, spy and adviser to the British government in Afghanistan, caused quite a stir in Edinburgh circles when he arrived in Scotland in 1844. The son of a wealthy Kashmiri, Lal was only 28 when he made his visit, but he had already experienced a lifetime's worth of adventure. Taken into service as a boy by Sir Alexander Burnes, who later became the British government's second- in-command in Kabul, he survived the Afghan uprising of 1841, unlike his master.
