IT'S strange, but whenever people talk of Europe, I always think
of exotic places across the Channel: Paris, the Riviera, Rome,
Seville, the Alps. I always forget that I am European. This stems
largely from being Scottish, milk-bottle coloured and being
permanently covered up. I have always been in awe of real Europeans
first glimpsed on early teenage holidays. They always seemed so
blase, so effortlessly cool; insouciant, suntanned, with great
clothes. Frizzy and freckly were definitely outwith their realm of
experience.
