The Painting the Navy Shipped Out; Banned in 1934, Paul Cadmus's Bawdy `Fleet' Is on View in N.Y.

"The Fleet's In!," the raucous painting by the American realist Paul Cadmus that was banned from exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art by the secretary of the Navy in 1934, is back on view in New York City for the first time in 58 years.

Painted for the Public Works of Art Project (a forerunner of the WPA) in 1934, Cadmus's satiric depiction of leering sailors cavorting with a group of promenading "floozies" outraged the Navy and catapulted Cadmus to national front-page infamy at age 29.
