City Moves To Control Xanax; Legal Tranquilizer Popular With Addicts

A tiny purple tranquilizer, highly addictive and dangerous when combined with alcohol and other drugs, is being sold on District streets without fear of prosecution because it is not a controlled substance under D.C. law.

But after a two-year push by D.C. police, city officials are about to put Xanax on the District's list of controlled substances, freeing police to go after what authorities say is the most troubling prescription drug being peddled illegally on the street.
