Rambo Rumble; French Arts Award to Stallone Draws Ridicule

It seemed too absurd to believe, even as the award was being
pinned on his rippling chest: France - France, international symbol
of cultural discernment - decorating Sylvester Stallone - Rocky,
Rambo, a cultural metaphor for a blunt instrument - as an officer of
its Order of Arts and Letters.
Oliver Stone made some sense. Bob Dylan, decorated last year,
was at least a rebel. Even Warren Beatty, who got his own medal
today at a ceremony packed with reporters, could pass in a pinch.
But Rambo?
Culture Minister Jack Lang's dubious choice has brought him
nothing but criticism and ridicule ...
