It took a long time for Christopher Columbus to become the hero
of an opera, and even longer for that opera to find its way to the
New World. But centuries of delay will end this afternoon in the
University of Maryland's Tawes Recital Hall with the first American
performance (excerpted and in concert form) of "Il Colombo ovvero
L'India scoperta" ("Columbus or India Discovered"), which had its
world premiere in Rome in 1690.
