Grant approved to revitalize East End: $1.2 million total will pay for second phase of; Washington Street facelift

Four years ago, Mary Jean Davis went to Pat Brown with an idea to
revitalize Washington Street East, but Brown doubted the reality of
achieving funding.
Brown, the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority president, told the
at-large City Councilwoman, though, if she could find a way to pay
for the project, he would help it happen.
Wednesday, Gov. Bob Wise presented Charleston with Davis'"dream
come true" in the form of a $984,000 Transportation Enhancement
grant. The renewal authority, which is sponsoring the grant, will
match 20 percent of it with $246,000, Brown said.
