Coal House remains a rare tourist attraction, Unusual building in Williamson has survived many floods

WILLIAMSON - Coal piles are so common in southern West Virginia that even tourists soon learn to ignore them.

When a 65-ton pile of coal has walnut paneling and central heat and air, however, even locals have to stop and stare.

Built in 1933 by Tug Valley businesses, the Coal House in Williamson is on the National Register of Historic Places. For its 71- year history, it has always housed the Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce, but its space has also been used for various other activities.
