Bill would expand DNA database: All convicted felons could be required to submit samples; Legislature 2004

All convicted felons - including white-collar criminals - would be forced to give police DNA samples, under a bill introduced today in the House of Delegates.

Aimed at expanding the State Police DNA database, a growing tool to catch repeat criminal offenders, a bill passed unanimously by the House Judiciary Committee would allow police to collect samples from all felons, not just those convicted of violent crimes.

That means offenders convicted of crimes such as forgery, credit card fraud or repeat drunken-driving offenses would submit to DNA testing.
