Bush official calls tariffs a success, Commerce official says steel industry is healthier now

WASHINGTON - Steep tariffs on foreign-made steel have strengthened
the U.S. steel industry since they were imposed 18 months ago, a top
Bush administration official said.
But Commerce Department Undersecretary Grant Aldonas on Tuesday
stopped short of recommending the tariffs stay in place until they
expire in 2005 - the focus of a White House debate that pits
presidential politics against global economics.
"The initial decision by the president was a success," Aldonas
told reporters at a rally of steel companies and steel employees from
Baltimore and Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. "It did ...
