Shamir Says Camp David Not Binding; Leader Distances Israel From Accord

Israel no longer is bound to follow "every word" of the Camp David accords, which provide a formula for Palestinian autonomy in the occupied lands, Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir was quoted as saying today.

"We are not obligated to every word written there," Shamir said in an interview published in most Israeli newspapers. He added that Israel would adhere to the agreement "in principle."

It was the first time an Israeli leader has questioned Israel's commitment to the 1978 U.S.-brokered accords, which serve as the basis for U.S. and Israeli diplomacy in the Middle East.
