Unripe and ready, Green tomato pie good even for those not fans of the green fruit

* EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first in a summer series about favorite fruits and vegetables of the season. I don't like fried green tomatoes. Well, not unless you are talking about the movie by the same name. I've seen it countless times.

However, my mouth waters just thinking about the green tomato season, the window of time when I make green tomato pie. I first tasted this luscious dish at a retreat in 1998 when I visited the old Cenacle Retreat House to do a story on the spirituality of dreams.

I left there dreaming about the green tomato pie that the nuns prepared for our lunch.
