Man dies in truck, train collision: Driver didn't stop at intersection, witnesses say

A man was killed today in South Charleston when he failed to stop at a lowered crossing gate and his pickup truck was struck by an Amtrak passenger train, police said.

The driver, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, died on impact when the eastbound train struck his vehicle about 10:30 a.m. at the Chestnut Street crossing, said Lt. D.B. Cunningham of the South Charleston Police Department.

His vehicle was pushed about 100 yards down the tracks where the train, which was carrying six passenger cars, came to a stop, Cunningham said.
