J. Carter Brown, the populist patrician who has overseen the transformation of the National Gallery of Art, yesterday astonished his trustees and his staff by announcing his intention to retire as director before the year is out.

In his resignation letter, Brown wrote that he was leaving to devote more attention to his "increasingly demanding ... additional responsibilities," which include his chairmanship of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and the Pritzker Architectural Prize jury, and membership on many boards.
