Officials looking for ways to assist mental patients

The Kanawha County Commission and sheriff's department are looking
for ways to address the needs of mental patients, needs some say have
been neglected for too long.
The sheriff's department requested funds this year for a mental
hygiene officer to help transport patients to and from the county's
Judicial Annex.
The task of transporting involuntary mental patients to hearings
in the annex has been the task of a few deputies who are on call
virtually 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Lt. John Rutherford said
during Tuesday's budget hearing.
