When Poland's new government was installed last month, President Lech Walesa, noting the huge economic and political problems that lay ahead, predicted that Poland this year would "change prime ministers like car bumpers."

Last week, that colorful prediction took on a harder edge as energy price increases and a reduced budget announced by the government of Prime Minister Jan Olszewski set off a wave of labor strikes and protests.
