Had Commodore Robert Peary first spent 10 days on Wrangel Island
hiding in a snow blind in subzero temperatures in the hope of seeing
a mother polar bear bring her newborn cubs out of their birth den, he
would never have gone looking for the North Pole. But that is what
wildlife photographer Dan Guravich and I are doing. Air at 20 degrees
below zero pushed by a 15-knot east wind chills us as if it were 60
below. Our tea has frozen in its thermos. Icicles hang from Dan's
mustache. Muscles cramp. Patience dwindles.
