Police in Nigeria clashed with pro-democracy demonstrators defying a ban on political activity by the army general who took power this week.

Police confirmed clashes in one southern city, and democracy campaigners reported unrest and arrests in two others. "The police fired tear gas and many demonstrators were arrested in Abeokuta," a police officer there said.
