While other Washingtonians were frolicking outside under a sunny
autumn sky one Saturday last month, Ashok Bajaj was heavily involved
in his favorite form of recreation: work. Seated in the office of his
restaurant at 701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, the 34-year-old New Delhi
native was reviewing his finances, planning his upcoming week and
basking in a rare moment of self-satisfaction.
In the five years since he had arrived in Washington from London,
knowing neither the city nor anyone in it, he had founded two $1
million-plus restaurants in a recession economy: The Bombay Club,
