Matthew Modine tells a story about the first time he worked with Robert Altman. It was on the set of "Streamers," the 1983 film based on the play by David Rabe, and Modine was suffering over a monologue he had to deliver. "I was nervous," the actor recalls. "I was looking for some direction, and I asked Bob about the scene, if he could give me some idea... ."

"When do you do the scene?" the director wanted to know.

"In three days," Modine replied.

"Oh, there's plenty of time. We'll talk about it then."

The next day Modine went to Altman again. "Oh, but that scene is in a couple of days," ...
