the Kwakiutl Indians of the Northwest Coast go to battle, they throw
presents at each other.
The tribe fascinated early anthropologists with its potlatch
ceremonies, in which great feasts were spread and vast wealth was
given away to friends and enemies. The winner of a "war" was the
chief who gave away the most. The Canadian government banned this
unhuman behavior in 1884, so the chiefs shifted their potlatches to
December and said they were just giving Christmas presents.
