Echo Memories tells the tale of the families who helped lay the
foundations of the modern-day WashingtonIn about 1850, a notable
industrialist called Isaac Lowthian Bell came to Washington, on
Wearside, and began his close involvement with the Washington
chemical works.Hugh Lee Pattinson had founded these works back in
1837 on the site now occupied by Pattinson Industrial Estate.
Although Pattinson's name is recalled, it is the name of Bell that
should really be better known.Bell was born in 1816 and was the son
