Greece and Turkey are engaged in a massive arms buildup with the
support of the United States and other Western allies even though
some experts fear it could escalate their ancient rivalry and
possibly embroil them in the Balkan conflict.
The two NATO members, which have clashed in the past over Cyprus
and the Aegean Sea, have emerged in the past year as two of the
world's biggest arms purchasers as they strive to modernize their
military forces while preserving a rough balance of power.
