Lever-action rifles come out of the woods

Pennsylvania deer hunting is generally a short-range activity. Seventy-five yards is likely the average shot for most deer hunters, with quite a few being closer. Long shots are not the norm in good deer habitat, where the cover is thick.

Pennsylvania deer hunters used lever-action rifles or slide- action (pumps) rifles for deer for years. Those original pumps and lever-action rifles were chambered for short-range cartridges; many of those still fit the woodland deer hunter's needs.
