The state Department of Agriculture will hold a hearing Thursday on its proposal to expand the area in Yakima County quarantined for apple maggots.

The department made the proposal after an apple maggot population was detected in residential orchards in a nonquarantine area.

The maggots reproduce and live in apples. Fruit containing apple maggots is considered infected and cannot be shipped.

The current quarantined area includes Yakima County residential and commercial orchards, plus shippers in an area beginning 10 miles west of the city limits of Yakima. ...
