Winery defends its Rattlesnake

Zillah -- Careful: This Rattlesnake bites.

Especially when it comes to wine.

Paul Portteus, maker of Rattlesnake Ridge brand wines, has convinced an upstart Montana winery to stop using the term "Rattlesnake."

"If somebody uses it, we have to defend it," Portteus says.

The trademark dispute comes at the same time the federal government has designated the Rattlesnake Hills as a American Viticultural Area, which comes with its own benefits of nomenclature - - and its own disagreements.
