Distemper outbreak hits animal shelter

An outbreak of distemper has temporarily closed the Humane Society
of Central Washington's shelter in Yakima and forced officials to
euthanize at least 60 dogs and some cats out of a population of about
100.
After a thorough cleaning, the shelter will reopen Monday at noon,
Alan Landvoy, executive director, said Friday in a telephone
interview.
Landvoy said several people who recently adopted dogs reported
back to shelter officials this week that their pets had tested
positive for the viral disease, which can be fatal. Area
