Witty and worldly-wise Dorothy Parker, born with a pocketful of wry, was one with the low moans and shrill cries of the Jazz Age.

Parker was many women - poet, short story author, screenwriter and playwright, and supporter of social causes. Yesterday was the centennial of her birth. She died June 7, 1967.

Despite her bouts of depression and her memento mori verse, Parker lived longer than any other of the original Algonquin Round Tablers - that collection of literary swells who gathered to swap gossip at the hotel next to The New Yorker magazine. She once said that it "wasn't the Mermaid ...
