American Winner was just as matter of fact in performing as his trainer was in predicting.

"We're going to win it," trainer Milton Smith said before yesterday's Hambletonian at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J.

Not only did American Winner win and move within a victory of harness racing's triple crown, he did it with the fastest heat in Hambletonian history and the fastest-ever two-heat total for an any- age trotter.
