Are Space Shuttles Too Old to Keep Flying? -- Many people, including former engineers at NASA, say wear and tear have taken toll

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - As the years and miles roll by, space
shuttles age. Wiring insulation can get brittle, crack and cause an
electrical short. Fuel delivery systems can warp and leak. Computer
chips can develop microscopic cracks from too many vibrations,
causing systems to freeze.
These signs of aging on NASA's shuttles were fixed as needed along
with regular overhauls - until the disintegration of Columbia over
Texas in February grounded the fleet.
Now some members of Congress, former NASA engineers and academics
believe the shuttle is too unsafe to fly because of wear and tear ...
